A pencil sketch of a castle included with the letter.
[31 March 1944]
Dear Bud,
I received two of your letters today and certainly enjoyed them. I got one of Feb. 27 and one of March 12, also Sarah's of March 12. I hear quite often from all of you now and I am truly glad of it. I had several letters from others today so it has been quite a day. I even have two from the office on that life insurance deal. Also received a package from the office with tobacco, candy and gum. The tobacco didn't taste much better than the ones I am getting but I certainly appreciate it.
The high-light of the week was a royal visit. Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery, the King (George VI), the Queen and Princess Elizabeth drive past the camp. I got a real good look at them all. They seemed real natural and friendly. They were very business-like in the inspection however. I have seen quite a few big shots since I have been on this side, but it was my first look at the royal family.
You asked about the pictures I took. I have sent them and hope you will get them soon, also some late pictures. I wanted to buy quite a few souvenirs but found the supply limited and a very high tax. I have some real good views of places here on postal cards if I can mail them. I hope I can, as they will give you a better idea of things, than I can by writing volumes. Tell Dad I received his letter of the 3rd yesterday and will answer when I have more time, as it is almost mail time now. Spring should be in for sure there as tomorrow is April first.
We are having a battery party, which should be good. Not very much news as you see so I will close for now.
Hello to the boys and all the folks.
Lots of love,
Odell
Note from Mrs Williams: Included with this letter was a sketch of a castle drawn in pencil - perhaps it came from a pamphlet from a tour. Odell wrote on the back: "A not very good picture of a castle, chateau, or what-have-you. Quite a joint! Started in 1100 finished 1600. In peace time OK for tourists. In war, a quiet reminder of man's stupidity."
